Commissions

A PLACE THAT MATTERS

Commission a painting, drawing or print by Neil Pittaway

Some places stay with us.

A house where you grew up.
A favourite landscape.
A memorable journey.
A family home.
A city that means something to you.
A view you never want to forget.

A commission offers the opportunity to turn one of those places, memories or ideas into an original work of art created especially for you.

As a painter, draughtsman and printmaker, I can work with you to develop a piece that is personal to you, while bringing my own approach to drawing, composition, colour and the character of a place.

FROM YOUR IDEA TO THE FINISHED WORK

Every commission begins with a conversation.

Perhaps you already have a particular subject in mind, or perhaps you have photographs, sketches or memories that you would like to explore.

We can discuss:

  • the subject or place
  • the story or meaning behind it
  • the type of artwork you would like
  • painting, drawing or printmaking
  • size and format
  • colour and atmosphere
  • your preferred timeframe
  • framing and presentation

I will then consider how best to translate your idea into an original work.

The aim is not simply to reproduce a photograph.

It is to create a work of art that has its own character and becomes something you can live with and enjoy for many years.

PLACES, PEOPLE & MEMORIES

Many commissions begin with a place.

It might be a family home, a landscape, a favourite building or somewhere associated with a particularly important memory.

My own work has always been closely connected with journeys, architecture, landscape and visual history, so these personal stories fit naturally within my practice.

Photographs can provide the starting point, while conversations, sketches and other material can help build a fuller understanding of what makes the subject important to you.

Where appropriate, I may also work from drawings or direct observation.

THE ARTWORK

Each commission is an original work created by me.

Depending on the subject and your requirements, a commission might take the form of:

Watercolour
For light, atmosphere, landscape and architectural subjects.

Drawing
For a more intimate and detailed response, particularly suited to buildings, people and places.

Painting
For larger or more developed compositions where colour, atmosphere and layered marks can become central to the work.

We can discuss the most appropriate medium when we talk about your idea.

A PERSONAL COLLABORATION

Although the finished artwork is created by me, the commission process is collaborative.

Your memories, photographs, ideas and knowledge of the subject provide the starting point.

My role is to bring my experience as an artist to that material — deciding how to compose the work, develop the drawing, use colour and create a finished piece that feels both personal and unmistakably my own.

The result should be something that could not have been made for anyone else.

HOW IT WORKS

01 · THE CONVERSATION

Get in touch and tell me about the artwork you have in mind.

It is helpful to include photographs or other reference material, together with an indication of the size and medium you are considering.

02 · DEVELOPING THE IDEA

We discuss the subject, composition, scale, medium and what you would like the finished work to convey.

I can then advise you on the most suitable approach.

03 · THE ARTWORK

Once the commission is agreed, I begin developing the work.

Depending on the project, this may involve preparatory drawings, sketches or studies before the final piece is completed.

04 · COMPLETION

When the artwork is finished, I will arrange the next steps with you, including collection, delivery and framing where appropriate.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO DISCUSS A COMMISSION?

If there is a place, person, landscape or memory that you would like to turn into an original work of art, I would be very pleased to hear from you.

You do not need to have everything decided before getting in touch.

Tell me about your idea →

Please include your name, contact details and as much information as you can about the subject, preferred medium and approximate size.

I will then get in touch to discuss the project with you.
