RWS SPRING 2024: TRANSPARENCY
29MARCH TO 23 APRIL 2024
Overview
The Royal Watercolour Society annual Spring exhibition, featuring works in waterbased media on paper. This year's theme is 'Transparency', where I will be exhibiting four new watercolour paintings.
From the Bankside Gallery: "Transparency is the defining trait that renders watercolour such a demanding medium. While some artists cherish this quality for its capacity to impart freshness and lightness, others consider it to be a formidable challenge. In their pursuit of capturing form, many artists build thick layers of water-based paint, while others hint at light with indications of colour applied over open stretches of paper. Whether finding the balance between subtlety and intensity or experimenting with varied applications, artists grapple with the allure and complexity of transparency in every brushstroke. This exhibition of works by members of the Royal Watercolour Society will explore the intricate and diverse world of watercolour and its many applications."
Charles Williams PRWS
I will have four new framed works for sale in this Exhibition at Bankside Gallery which is next to Tate Modern in Central London. For more information about this exhibition please visit the link below:

SMALL AND MIGHTY 09 - 19 NOVEMBER 2023
From the Bankside: Small But Mighty showcases all forms of printmaking and highlights the powerful, ambitious and impressive nature of works created on a small scale.
This open submission exhibition, established by the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) received a huge number of entries when it took place last year, from which Guest Selector Jonny Hannah had chosen a selection of nearly 270 works. These artworks spanned printmaking mediums from intaglio, relief, digital, screenprint, letterpress and embossing and show printmaking used in a diverse way, incorporating objects and sculptural forms or taking the form of artists' books.
What they all had in common was their size - where all work being under 50cm, this exhibition demonstrated the mighty impact works can have despite their small size.
I had one of my new small etchings selected and exhibited in this selected exhibition.
RWS AUTUMN 2023 RISK 06 OCTOBER - 04 NOVEMBER 2023
From the Bankside: Making art always contains risk. Anything the hand does in making a painting is subject to slippage. Even that most laborious and derided business of tracing a drawing onto paper to fill it in might involve a slip, a smudge, an incoherent line. People talk about improvisation and invention and happy accidents and deliberate mistakes when they talk about painting, and what they’re talking about is this gap between eye, hand and materials.
There’s a lot that can go wrong. Some artists work as if it’s always going right, and the painter just hasn’t realised it yet. Others walk on a tightrope of decisions, holding their breath and hoping not to wobble.
For the annual Autumn exhibition 2023, artists of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) explored the theme of 'Risk' with a fantastic selection of new paintings.
I exhibited four new paintings in this show and the works were based on my recent travels in August to Ladakh, India.
