Mountains · Monasteries · Journeys

India has been an important source of inspiration throughout my travels, with Ladakh in particular leaving a lasting impression on my work.

Travelling through Ladakh, I was drawn to the extraordinary combination of vast mountain landscapes, ancient monasteries, villages and traditional buildings. The dramatic changes in light, colour and atmosphere create a landscape that is constantly changing, and one that lends itself naturally to drawing and painting.

As with much of my travel work, I use sketchbooks to record my experiences directly from the places I visit. I draw the landscape, architecture and details of everyday life, making notes and observations that later become the starting point for paintings, drawings and prints in the studio.

I am particularly interested in the relationship between the landscape and the buildings within it. In Ladakh, monasteries, whitewashed villages and small settlements appear within an immense mountain environment, creating a strong sense of place and history.

These journeys have added another important dimension to my continuing exploration of landscape, architecture and visual history. The drawings and paintings in this archive are records of places encountered, but also of the experience of travelling through them — the changing light, the scale of the mountains and the quiet details discovered along the way.

This gallery brings together my work from India and Ladakh, developed through travel, observation, sketchbooks and memories of these remarkable places.
