London & Architecture

Architecture and the places I visit have always been an important part of my work as an artist.

Living and working in London has given me a constant source of inspiration, from its historic buildings, streets and landmarks to the changing character of the city. I have spent many years drawing and painting London, often working directly from observation and recording the places around me in sketchbooks.

Travelling has extended this interest into a much wider exploration of architecture and place. Through my journeys across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Himalayas, I have become fascinated by the different ways in which people build, live and interact with their surroundings.

I am particularly interested in the history and character of buildings and places, and how architecture can tell us something about the people, cultures and events that have shaped them. Sometimes it is a famous landmark; at other times it is an ordinary street, a doorway, a courtyard or a building that has simply caught my attention.

Many of these works begin as drawings and sketches made on location. I use these observations, together with photographs, research and memories of travelling, to develop paintings, drawings and prints back in the studio.

This collection brings together my work inspired by London and architectural places around the world. It reflects my continuing interest in drawing, painting and printmaking, and in recording the visual character and history of the places I encounter.

For me, architecture is not simply about buildings. It is about place, history, people and the experience of being there.
