Landscape & Mountains

Exploring drawing and painting through the landscape

I travel into the landscape, draw directly from observation, record the journey in sketchbooks, and develop those observations into finished paintings and printsLandscape and mountains have been a constant source of inspiration throughout my work and my travels.

Much of my landscape work has developed from my world travel, travelling in and through the places I visit gives me the opportunity to experience a landscape in more depth, to look closely at the changing light, the weather, the colours and the relationship between the landscape and my journey within it.

The mountains have always held a particular fascination for me. From the Himalayas and the high landscapes of Peru, Nepal and Ladakh to the mountains and landscapes of Europe and Britain. I am interested in their scale, structure and changing character. Trekking allows me to experience these places from within the landscape rather than simply viewing them from a distance.

I am not only drawn to  dramatic mountain views but other types of  landscapes from recording the desert landscapes of Jordan to capturing the might and power of natural forces of The Victoria Falls.

These experiences of journeying,  walking, observing and drawing are central to the way I work. The finished paintings and prints are often a combination of direct observation, research, memory and imagination, bringing together different moments from a journey.

This gallery brings together my landscape and mountain work, developed through walking, trekking, sketchbooks and a continuing fascination with the places I encounter.

For me, the journey through the landscape is as important as the view itself.
