Sketchbook - South America. The Andes & Peru
Peru – A Sketchbook Journey
I have travelled to Peru and Machu Picchu twice, and each journey has given me a different opportunity to explore the landscape, history and culture of the Andes through drawing. Trekking the Inca Trail, I worked directly from the places I encountered, filling my sketchbooks with drawings, notes and observations along the way.
Walking through the mountains, I was fascinated by the changing landscape, from high passes and dramatic valleys to the ancient stonework and architecture of the Inca world. My sketchbooks allowed me to slow down and really look, recording the atmosphere, details and experiences of the journey as they happened.
The drawings and paintings from these travels are a personal record of my time in Peru. Some were made directly on the trail, while others developed later in the studio from my sketches, memories and observations. Together they form part of my continuing journey of drawing, travelling and discovering the places and histories behind them.
