Africa . Sketchbook & Journeys

From The Victoria Falls to Cape Point

During my travels through Africa, I journeyed by road from the mighty Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe–Zambia border to Cape Town in South Africa. Travelling by road and camping along the way, I filled my sketchbooks with drawings, notes and observations, while also making paintings and studies directly from the places I encountered.

The journey took me through the wildlife-rich landscapes of Botswana and Namibia, across Namibia’s vast desert scenery, including Dune 45 and Deadvlei, and eventually to the dramatic coastline and landmarks of Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope.

My sketchbook work became a way of recording the journey as it unfolded — capturing the changing landscapes, wildlife, architecture, light and atmosphere of each place. These drawings and paintings are a personal record of the journey and continue to provide inspiration for my work in the studio.
